| The Aztecs Story |
|
Clan Aztecs (Team-Fortress Classic): Aztecs came about as the clan in late 2003/early 2004 through a desire for competitive Team Fortress Classic league play without the hardcore timesink. Incarnations of the clan or guild in other games have always tried to keep this ethos - enjoyable and challenging gaming with friends structured around real life commitments. Bane and Vindi (now WoW - Shattered Halls Alliance) started the TFC clan, who spammed its way through a variety of leagues. Many Aztecs tfcers had played together in other clans such as rJ. and CRH in some cases having gamed with each other for many years. (*cough - old bastards). Vindi, Bane, Feign, Grim, Sabre, Big Chief and Hammeh in addition to many others all shot (or attempted to shoot) their way through all that opposed until TFC as an online clanned game started to go into recession. This was due to a new generation of FPSs, the source update and ballooning popularity of Counterstrike above other HL mods and a lack of any official update for the game or the ever awaited Team Fortress 2. As the league and clan seen slowly slipped away, Aztecs began afresh in a new world of mmorpgs.
The Mighty Aztecs (Star Wars Galaxies): May 2004 - with TFC slowly slipping into the twilight, a number of Aztecs moved into Star Wars Galaxies, in no small part due to Chiefys scottish bullying. Aztec Boulevard, the new Aztec player village was established on Dantooine, with many of the above members taking their own small plot of the planet for their own. Aztecs became a more European guild, with a swedish invasion of Fluffigt, Aihws Akaa, Horrg, Delmos and many others who still actively play within the guild. Current active members such as Olib, Jocelynn, Cacarius, Kalimero and many others also came into the Aztec fold at this stage. From being a small hamlet on Dantooine, Aztecs became a decent sized but primarily highly active guild under the ying yang leadership of Chiefy and Hammeh, with the Boulevard becoming a bustling crafting metropolis with many quality crafters. The clan became one of the first few rebel guilds on the server to successfully craft a jetpack in the Death Watch Bunker, the games premiere PvE challenge. Whilst playing to unlock jedi characters, through the old profession grind system, then the Force sensitive system, many Aztecs also played a large role in the PvP life of the Europe Chimaera server. Aztecs small contingent of pvpers (with sometimes the whole guild getting involved on occasion) could be regularly seen taking the fight against the imperial menace as a member of the RAN, working with larger guilds in intense and fun pvp actions, ranging from the Alliance Citadel on Dantooine through to various raids on player held imperial cities and planets. In an attempt to make the game more accessable, SOE planned a number of changes to the gameplay of SWG which started with the Combat Upgrade. These changes were generally felt by experienced players to be a dumbing down of the games fun mechanics whilst simultaneously punishing longer term players by devaluing their playtime and hard work. In spite of this, Aztecs still flourished through the CU, with many players highly active in server life. However, another planned upgrade called the New Game Experience, effectively dumbing SWG down to almost a point and click shooter, was seen by many players to be the end of the SWG that everyone had enjoyed and held dear. With many players on the server planing to quit the game come the playstyle change, many Aztecs started to filter off to other games such as EQ2 and WoW. Towards the end of the Aztec era in SWG, many Aztecs got as much fun out of the game as possible before its final curtain. The Aztec Gank Bus could be seen out almost every night, a group of bounty hunters striving to get the same jedi target with often comical results :) In the final months before the NGE hit, Hammeh and a few Aztecs along with other pvpers on the alliance side formed a PvP guild called Deity, who enjoyed further scraps with the Imperials, including a final free-for-all guild war organised by many guild leaders on the server, where literally anyone could attack anyone :) In the meantime, Vindi and Bane (surprise surprise :p) had obtained another guild charter, this time in WoW, and thus the next era of Aztecs started...
Aztecs (World of Warcraft): By September 2005 several of the Aztecs members from SWG had started playing World of Warcraft, and it with in this month that the final person signed the guild charter, and WoW Aztecs came into existance. After around two months of the guilds existence, it was decided that more members were needed, to turn end game raiding into a reality. So spamming was started, and in a very short space of time many members were recruited, which inevitably resulted in problems due to a lack of any sort of screening process. It wasnt long before we seemed to have enough members to start raiding, and a date was set for our first raid, into ZulGurub. Over the next several months the guild progressed in ZulGurub before moving on into the Molten Core, where bosses were downed at a reasonably rapid rate, and it was loot for all. On the 2nd June 2006, Aztecs succeeded in killing Ragnaros, and discussion of entering Black Wing Lair was started, however this didnt happen for some months whilst members were geared up with shiny purples. Once again a date was set, and Aztecs entered Black Wing Lair for the first time, though the first kill, Razorgore, didnt come for two to three weeks, but when it did there were cheers all around. Vaelstrasz, the second boss in BWL, was first slain by Aztecs in August, though no further progress was made through Blackwing Lair for some time. This was due to a summer lull in activity with many members away and focussing on alternative things, combined with a reluctance to mass recruit in order to drive raiding. The rest of 2006 was a bit of a bumpy ride for Aztecs, with mixed feelings over whether raiding should continue (due to the ever approaching expansion pack) and members leaving the guild causing problems. Despite these problems, BWL was cleared up to Nefarian, though Nefarian himself was never slain. On the 16th of January The Burning Crusade expansion pack was launched, and the guild had the first Blood Elf Paladin on the server, who remained the highester level BE Paladin for nearly a whole hour! A month or two after its launch, Aztecs were once again venturing into raid instances, with progress through the 10-man Karazhan going relatively fast, though the guild struggled to get the 25 members online at once for instances such as Grulls lair. After a slow start in TBC, Aztecs eventually shifted into gear, clearing up to M'uru in Sunwell Plateu pre-3.0, with M'uru and Kil'jaeden dying shortly after 3.0. Come November 2008 Blizzard's second expansion, Wrath of the Lich King was launched and we once again plunged ourselves into the leveling and collecting of shiny objects. Unfortunately WotLK spellt the end of WoW for some of our members who gradually grew tired of the game (they'll be back, if not in WoW then in the next game!), but this does happen with MMO's and so the guild goes on. Click raid progress under the WoW section to the left if you wish to see how we are faring.
Scetza (Lord of the Rings Online): On the 22nd May 2007 Aztecs was formed in the Lord of the Rings Online, with several long standing members at its core. However the joy was short lived when it turned out the kinship name of Aztecs was against Turbines naming convention. Several alternatives were considered, until eventually Scetza (obviously, a complete reversal of the name) was settled upon. Though there were some fun times, LOTRO didn't have the holding power of WoW, resulting in members returning to WoW after a short period of time.
OLD (World Of Warcraft): A lot of the original Aztecs moved from the more hardcore attitude of WoW on the AlAkir server and set up a guild on the Shattered Halls alliance side called OLD.
Aztecs has now branched out with a variety of seperate groups, but with the announcement of Star Wars: The Old Republic for god knows when, hopefully EA won't screw it up and Aztecs will reunite in a game closer to their roots sometime soon. |
